Driver – Non-CDL

SUMMARY

Operates multi-passenger vehicles to compassionately transport the senior community for individual, group, or special purpose trips. Provides required passenger assistance, to include the movement of passenger-occupied wheelchairs or walking assistance to and from the door. Maintains assigned vehicle and records information on vehicle use and passenger trips.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Operate multi-passenger vehicles scheduled for individual, group, or special purpose trips; operate vehicles according to all applicable laws and regulations, assuring a smooth, comfortable, and safe ride for all passengers.
  • Provide passenger assistance as required, to include entering and exiting the vehicle, finding seats, securing seat belts, and securing any packages or other articles carried onto the vehicle, as well as walking assistance to and from the door for senior passengers as needed; perform the loading and unloading of passenger-occupied wheelchairs which includes, but is not limited to, pushing, tilting, lifting, and supporting the wheelchair.
  • Record and report daily passenger and vehicle data as provided via the Driver’s manifest or vehicle data terminal.
  • Comply with directions from Operations regarding route and vehicle assignment; notify Operations of any difficult passengers, traffic delays, or whenever exiting the vehicle; adhere to established procedures for time and attendance sheets or as directed.
  • Perform daily pre/post-trip inspection on assigned vehicle and report any issues to the Vehicle Maintenance Coordinator/Trainer or Operations Coordinator; report any vehicle damage immediately.
  • Report and document immediately any incidents or accidents involving passengers/vehicles or vehicle malfunction per established policies and procedures.
  • Attend training classes and staff meetings as scheduled or required.
  • Clean vehicle interior daily and exterior of vehicle as needed; refuel vehicles as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Transportation Operations Manager or other Neighborly staff.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to handle emergency situations when a passenger needs medical attention.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with passengers.
  • Ability to take and pass a written and physical driving test, as a condition of employment.
  • Ability to pass a physical examination to certify physical capability to perform the job, as a condition of employment.
  • Ability to maintain client agency confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of physical mobility and limitation of the elderly.
  • Knowledge of the roads and trip generators in the geographical portion of Pinellas County to which assigned.
  • Knowledge to operate cellular telephone.
  • Knowledge of maintenance reporting procedures.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Minimum of (1) year prior professional driving experience and experience working with the elderly is desirable.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Possession of a valid Florida Driver’s License and not more than four (4) current points, as verified by the D.M.V., as a condition of employment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to speak, hear, sit, stand, walk, stoop, crouch, kneel, use hands and fingers, and reach with hands and arms. The employee must frequently get up and down from the seated position and climb up and down bus steps numerous times during the day. The employee must physically control and drive agency owned vehicles/buses and refuel vehicle as necessary. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

The employee must provide physical assistance to all passengers weighing up to 250 pounds in walking, vehicle loading, climbing steps, seating and securing passenger seat restraints and vehicle unloading operations. The employee must physically push, tilt, lift, support, load, secure and unload wheelchair bound passengers. The employee must occasionally lift up to 40 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

  • Requires both indoor and outdoor work. Exposure to natural weather element of rain, sun, wind, fog or other inclement weather conditions.
  • Exposure to cleaning fluids and gasoline.
  • Exposure to confused, aggressive and upset passenger on a daily basis.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to traffic. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
